The name Purl comes from a 19th century beverage that was commonly sold on the streets of London. A malt liquor, medicated or spiced; formerly, ale or beer in which wormwood or other bitter herbs had been infused, and which was regarded as tonic, though later variations ran to hot ale and gin, pepped up with ginger and sugar.
